Rev. Caitlin Simpson, a practical theologian, ordained minister with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and current doctoral student in the Ph.D. Education and Social Change program at Bellarmine University, talks about the art of humanization using critical theory and a theology of inclusion rooted in the work of theological giants such as Letty Russel, Katie Cannon, and Richard Niebuhr as well as sociology giants such as Brené Brown and Peter Block, to name a few. Theology is often viewed in terms of absolution, in that there is one right or correct conceptual framework with which to view the world. Often, this frame is structured using binary-isms; you’re a sinner or saint, you’re in or you’re out, etc. In an ever-advancing age of rising millennial generation professionals, Caitlin discusses how binary frames serve as a barrier to progress for individual spirituality, for the education of others on the various forms of religiosity, and why building a community that embraces the multi-faceted art of humanization is vital for future generations.
