Deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules is being considered as an abundant new source of in-demand minerals, such as cobalt and nickel, to underpin a transition to a low carbon global economy. The costs, benefits and risks of such an endeavor need to be carefully balanced against those of established land-based mining, so that an informed decision can be made.
